A vigilant eye on cannabis news

• The government in one of the prime growing areas in South Africa, Kwa-Zulu Natal, recently issued 664 cannabis growing permits. Farmers will be able to cultivate, store and transport content with a THC of not more than 0.2%. 
• Portugal currently has 42 companies with licenses from Infarmed to operate in activities related to medicinal cannabis in Portugal, 8 more than in 2022. There are another 150 entities with the documentation to continue in the licensing process. 
• Four years after being legalised, Ireland opens its first cannabis clinic. Currently, there are three qualifying conditions included under the Medicinal Cannabis Access Programme: spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, intractable nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and severe treatment-resistant epilepsy.  
• Cannabis production in Zimbabwe seems to be in a mess according to this piece by Obert Chifamba. Currently out of the 59 licenced producers of the crop, only 10 are producing and selling. 
• The Public Health Authority in Switzerland has authorized the establishment of the first legal adult use stores in Europe as part of a pilot project to legalise cannabis. The project, called Project Grashaus is expected to start later this year. 
• Malta has granted the first two cannabis association licences. The distribution of cannabis to members can begin as soon as the first products are available, but these must be tested by the ARUC before being sold.
